Position Summary

The Director, Strategic Initiatives is accountable for directing the planning and execution of multiple concurrent strategic initiatives at Long Beach Medical Center and Miller Children�s and Women�s Hospital. The Director, Strategic Services will design, evaluate, plan, direct and implement projects and initiatives that originate from the system and hospital strategic plans as well as ah-hoc opportunities originating from executive leadership.The Director, Strategic Services must be able to effectively facilitate and collaborate with executives, project teams, physicians and internal / external stakeholders (vendors, etc.). The Director, Strategic Services will ensure develop project plans and advance projects / initiatives through implementation to ensure strategic growth goals (revenue, volume, etc) are met.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Under the direction of the Vice President of Strategy and Business Development, the Director, Strategic Services will be accountable for directing the evaluation and implementation of large / complex programs, projects and initiatives for Long Beach Medical Center and Miller Children�s and Women�s Hospital.
  • Ensures the successful completion of major (high dollar or high strategic impact) strategic initiatives and projects (on time, within budget). Sample projects include new and/or enhanced clinical services, service locations, partnerships and affiliations, operating models, strategic ventures.
  • Collaborates with the Executive Team, Finance, Strategy / Business Development, Operations, and System Clinical Integration departments to evaluate, scope, determine ROI, and obtain approval of new initiatives, projects and programs.
  • Defines and scopes project / initiatives requirements, planning resources, costs and timeframes to ensure project success.
  • Designs project plans to ensure the timely evaluation and execution and identify key issues, problems, solution approaches, performance metrics and resources required.
  • Directs team / workgroup progress and presents project proposals and status reviews to executive staff and other audiences.
  • Develops project dashboards, facilitates the establishment of KPIs and targets to measure project and process performance.
  • Continually assesses project risks and facilitates contingencies and/or resolutions
  • Working with subject matter experts / stakeholders, incorporates innovative ideas / models, robust data driven insights, and lean principles.
  • Effectively engages stakeholders and facilitates multi-disciplinary dialogue and engagement throughout the evaluation and implementation process: from project scoping to implementation to close out.
  • Facilitates and leads multi-disciplinary teams and directs the work of staff and outside consultants / vendors (when necessary).
  • Educates, communicates and presents to the organization and its stakeholders on all aspects of project.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Bachelor�s degree in business, healthcare or quantitative discipline required
  • Master�s degree in business or healthcare strongly preferred.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience working in healthcare or payer organization in a strategy, financial, operational or project management capacity.
  • Demonstrable success directing complex strategic projects and initiatives to completion
  • Experience with business / strategic planning, project management, program development and implementation.
  • Strong track record of building positive working relationships at all organizational levels with both internal and external constituents.
  • Successful experience directing complex projects, from planning to execution.
  • Excellent physician relations skills
  • Strong problem solving and project management skills
  • Ability to facilitate / direct cross-functional workgroups with diverse stakeholders


  • Understanding of hospital inpatient and ambulatory programs and service lines (adult and pediatric).
  • Awareness of current and emerging healthcare trends and their implications.
  • Awareness of internal and external inpatient, ambulatory and physician data and benchmarking resources.
  • Understanding of project management principles and facilitative leadership methods.
  • Proven ability to organize and manage multiple priorities.
