Members of the MemorialCare Epic job family, work side by side our end users to install the Epic software, help lead and manage workflow/software changes, and ultimately transform the way that MemorialCare provides healthcare. MemorialCare's Epic Team develops creative strategies to achieve common end goals while collaborating with our end users. The role played by Epic Pharmacists Architect require both a background of clinical and software knowledge.

The Epic Pharmacist Architect is responsible for providing end users support in Beacon, Willow and/or Ambulatory modules of the Epic Electronic Medical Record (EMR). They specialize in the Oncology medication process, from ordering to administration, and are responsible for effective process design, development, and implementation of the EMR and Clinical Decision Support associated with Oncology. With their pharmaceutical and application knowledge, they support pharmacists, physicians, nurses, and other clinicians as the resource for requests related to EMR and pharmacy system changes and additions.

The Epic Pharmacist Architect drives collaboration across MemorialCare to ensure that Epic and its integrations are designed for interoperability, per defined policies, as well as industry best practices.They positively influence change for end users that maximizes the value of the system. The Epic Pharmacist Architect is responsible for developing and implementing an enterprise data strategy that aligns information assets with business and technology strategy.It is essential for this individual to be highly collaborative as they need to influence senior business leaders, functional leadership, as well as project and application managers.

Essential Job Outcomes

  • Applies in-depth knowledge of Epic modules such as Beacon, Willow and/or Ambulatory to ensure effective and optimal use of current application, incorporating refinements based on organizational changes or process improvements.

  • Acts as primary technical and subject matter expert addressing problems of system integration and overall compatibility. Drives precise project execution through consistent planning and communication.

  • Identifies and resolves complex problems and issues associated with enterprise wide applications to ensure high levels of application availability and user satisfaction. 

  • Stays abreast of current and emerging data technologies and trends and advises on how they can be used to support business and technology objectives. Builds prototypes to determine feasibility when warranted.

  • Identifies problem situations and considers all perspectives in terms of scope and consequences. Recommends refinements in applications based on organizational changes or process improvements.

  • Maximizes the maintainability of Epic, keeping customization at a minimum so that upgrades can be done efficiently and economically.  

  • Leads major/complex application specific or small IS projects by setting team direction, coordinating activities across different organizational functions, evaluating progress towards objectives, managing customer relationships and expectations, and taking corrective actions when deviations stray from plans as necessary. 

  • Acts as primary technical and subject matter expert addressing problems of system integration and overall compatibility. Drives precise project execution through consistent planning and communication.

  • Serves as a source of support and a positive role model through mentoring and training peers on build, workflow processes, testing, and implementation processes. Functions as a source of assistance and a positive role model by modeling desirable behaviors. 

  • Initiates department process improvement; identifies, designs and implements process, including outline of maintenance plan.

  • Stays abreast of latest clinical recommendations to architect technical solutions in alignment with latest clinical best practices. Applies clinical experience to actively identify, research, design, and implement build to which advances end user efficiency and enhances patient safety outcomes.

  • Maintains high level understanding of various department clinical and operational requirements to meet the needs of the end users/department units. Confers with clinical leadership on design decisions, including decisions based on regulatory and/or accreditation requirements.

  • Attends governing committee meetings as a committee member and advises & designs concepts originating in the governing committee. Collaborates with Regulatory team on current & future requirements, determining build and workflow changes and engaging operations on net new/changing workflows.

  • Provides clinical subject matter knowledge and participates on governing committees and regulatory teams as a clinical subject matter expert as necessary.



  • Minimum 5 years� Epic application experience or equivalent combined hands on Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and oncology pharmacy experience required. 

  • Progressive project management experience and demonstrated effective communication working independently as well as in a team situation meeting aggressive deadlines and established goals.

  • Experience leading projects requiring an end-to-end oncology Pharmacy workflow perspective, a high-level overall understanding of the application, and considerable knowledge of Epic Beacon, Willow and/or Ambulatory end user processes, effectively dedicating time across more than one project, and meeting established deadlines.

  • Demonstrated use of relevant �out of the box thinking� in conjunction with organization wide standardization.

  • Experience working in a fast-paced environment with minimal supervision and managing multiple priorities.

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively utilize system tools to meet functionality needs of users including proficiency with information systems technology such as Microsoft Office Products required.

  • Experienced in leading projects, providing expert consultative guidance and direction on change initiatives.

  • Proven ability in workflow and data analysis and design techniques, including needs assessment, specification development, quantitative methods, planning and gap analysis.

  • Past success leading meetings between business stakeholders, technical resources, and third parties for business requirements and technical solutions.

  • Experienced working with a diverse, multi-disciplinary team, and interacting with all levels of the organization.

  • Experienced with regulatory and/or accreditation guidelines & workflow design to meet guidelines.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of oncology clinical workflows.

  • Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience required.

  • Pharmacist license required, Pharm. D. preferred.

  • Deep knowledge of Epic oncology pharmacy experience is required; Epic proficiency or certification preferred.
