Position Summary:

The Human Milk and Formula Lab Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the Milk Lab. Utilizes a LEAN mindset, methods and management system.  Ensures compliance with regulatory requirements and Milk Lab standard work.  Demonstrates leadership that encourages and promotes a culture of safety.  Serves as a liaison between Milk Lab technicians and clinical staff (i.e Registered Dietitians, Nursing, and Physicians).  Develops and maintains interdepartmental relationships which foster open communication and respect.  

Essential Job functions:

Oversees the provision of formula and human milk/pasteurized human donor milk by monitoring the activities of the technicians within the Milk Lab.Ensures adequate staffing of technicians is maintained.Create/manages the schedule, assists with taking sick calls and PTO requests.Assists the Clincial Program Manager with assessing labor needs.Allocates staff resources to ensure safe and timely delivery of formula, human milk and pasteurized human donor milk.Orders/maintains inventory of supplies and materials to support the daily operations of Milk Lab.Works proactively to address issues in procurement and to reduce stock-outs.Assists the Clincial Program Manager in working with the purchasing department and/or vendors.Leads or assists with Performance Improvement and LEAN projects including data collection and interpretation.Sets the example for daily huddles and maintenance of department control and communication boards.Responds to safety issues in a timely manner and coaches front-line staff in problem-solving.Superuser for human milk and formula tracking system.Assists with development or adjustment of workflows and data management.Reports issues with software functionality.Participates in hiring.Leads technician orientation, training and performance management.Provides coaching as needed.May be a preceptor to students. Collaborates with Clinical Program Manager on the development of new training modules, competencies and standard work.Oversees and audits sanitation practices in the Milk Lab(i.e. tech adherence to the use of aseptic technique, infection control, daily appearance and personal hygiene).Oversees preventative maintenance of equipment including, but not limited to dishwasher, human milk warmers, refrigerators and freezers, as needed. Ensures the equipment is properly used, and required logs are completed and accurate.Interacts with Registered Dietitians, Nursing, and Physicians for purposes of order clarification and problem solving.Escalates problems to Clinical Program Manager, as needed.
Qualifications: 
Job Qualifications:
  • Minimum of 5 years experience working in a Milk Lab or equivalent setting OR minimum of 3 years experience working in a Milk Lab or equivalent setting with an Associate's degree (or higher) required. 
  • Demonstrated leadership qualities required. 
  • Basic supervision skills preferred.  
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills.  
  • Demonstrated effective communication skills, both written and verbal.  
  • Able to understand and perform algebra.  
  • Able to work independently. 
  • Close attention to detail. 
  • Organizational and time management skills.  
  • Computer skills using Word and Excel. 
  • Experience using an electronic medical record and/or food, formula or breastmilk tracking software system required.  
  • Must be able to read, write, and speak English fluently.

Education/Certifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required with 5 years experience. 
  • Associate's degree (or higher) in an applied science required, if work experience is <5 years. ServSafe certification preferred.
