Purpose Statement / Position Summary
The Blood Bank supervisor will provide oversight of the Blood Bank department. The Blood Bank supervisor will be responsible for the daily technical operation of the department to provide quality analysis of Blood Bank procedures in compliance with federal regulations and other accreditation standards as related to transfusion medicine.

The Blood Bank supervisor will oversee the general operation of the laboratory in the absence of the laboratory manager, assumes responsibility of special projects, and ensures protocols required for accreditation. The Blood Bank supervisor will assist in the development of programs and procedures to assure the department is aligned with community standards. In addition, the Blood Bank supervisor will perform work assignments as scheduled, produce accurate and timely results on current patient population in accordance with Orange Coast Memorial Medical Center Laboratory Services department standards and procedures. This position requires the full understanding and active participation in fulfilling the mission of Orange Coast Memorial Medical Center. It is expected that the employee demonstrate behavior consistent with our core values, support Orange Coast Memorial Medical Center’s strategic plan and participate in and advocate performance improvement/patient safety activities.

Essential Job Outcomes
1. Ensure the validity and accuracy of test results and maintains adequate Quality Control measures for the section.
2. Meet department specific and LIS competencies.
3. Perform pre-analysis, analysis and post-analysis of laboratory tests according to the Blood Bank department’s protocols and procedures.
4. Follow laboratory protocol to ensure proper identification of patients and specimens.
5. Ensure that procedures are in compliance with all regulatory guidelines.
6. Create, review and maintain all training checklists periodically for compliance with hospital and laboratory policies.
7. Competency and training are distributed to staff according to laboratory protocol.
8. Documentation of competency and training is maintained appropriately in employee files.
9. Demonstrate knowledge and competency to facilitate all phases of laboratory testing.
10. Proficient in the use of the current Laboratory Information System for data management.
11. Ensure temperatures are documented and preventive maintenance of equipment is performed according to laboratory protocol.
12. Ability to investigate and follow-up on requested tests or information from physicians and clients.
13. Ensure inventory of department supplies are maintained at proper levels.
14. Actively participate in all CAP regulatory activities.
15. Adhere to CAP and other regulatory guidelines in all areas of the laboratory.
16. Assess and assign section workload to achieve maximum efficiency.
17. Promote and participate in current department Gallup Impact plan.
18. Provide customer service effectively with the use of AIDET in communicating with all patients and visitors
19. “Other duties as assigned”


  • Minimum six years of experience in general laboratory, including at least five years of experience in Blood Bank.
  • Knowledge of current information system preferred.
  • Five years of supervisory experience.


  • Bachelor’s degree in a science discipline preferred.
  • Currently licensed as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist by the state of California.
