Purpose Statement / Position Summary

The Medication Refill Pharmacy Technician works to support the activities of the Medication Refill Program by managing the refill requests for chronic disease medications per established protocols. The medication refill pharmacy technician is responsible for processing refill requests or forwarding the requests to the appropriate prescriber for further evaluation. Based on protocols established by physician leaders within MemorialCare, the pharmacy technician will approve or deny refills, sending appropriate communication to the preferred pharmacy in a timely manner. In addition, the pharmacy technician will work with the Medication Therapy Management (MTM) team to promote patient adherence for chronic disease medication.

3.Ability to understand when medication should be forwarded for further evaluation

4.Perform detail-oriented work to accurately conduct medication refills based on protocol

5.Ability to work both independently and in a team-based setting in a positive and constructive manner

6.Ability to prioritize and multitask

7.Ability to follow company policies, procedures and directives

8.Effectively communicate in both verbal and written forms

9.   Other related duties and projects as assigned

Essential Job Outcomes

1.Evaluate medication refill requests and activities adhering to MemorialCare refill protocols, guidelines, productivity standards and turnaround times

2.Review chart documentation as it relates to the medication refill request’s accuracy and completeness

3.Determine if chart information satisfies specific medication protocol prior to authorizing refill request. Only authorizes the appropriate quantity of allowed refills per protocol and utilizes appropriate quick actions (QA’s) and commands

4.Take proper action and consideration when mail order pharmacy is involved.Makes 90 or 100-day determination when indicated

5.Ensure effective communication with providers and office staff through sufficient documentation related to medication refills including but not limited to reasons why a medication does not meet protocol guidelines.

6.Assist with refills from the Medication Therapy Management (MTM) team to enhance patient adherence

7.Collaborate and partner with the medication refill team, MTM, and TAN staff that may support the medication refill pool as needed

8.Attend medication refill staff and education meetings

9.Participate in any medication refill audits and ongoing monitoring activities

10.Prioritize work activities and track progress

*Placement in the pay range is based on multiple factors including, but not limited to, relevant years of experience and qualifications. Experience

 Required:

  1. Required High School or equivalent
  2. Maintain a California pharmacy technician license
  3. Minimum experience of two years working in retail or specialty pharmacy
  4. Prior experience in managing refill-related workflows
  5. Able to effectively and clearly communicate (written and verbal) in English
  6. Able to strictly follow written protocols and guidance
  7. Ability to perform pharmacy calculations
  8. Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  9. Ability to handle fluctuating volumes of work and prioritize work to meet deadlines.

 

Preferred:

  1. Experience clearly documenting in an electronic medical/health record (EPIC)
  2. Proficient in use of Microsoft applications (Word, Excel and Outlook) and EPIC
  3. Maintain a PTCB certification

 

Education

Current California Pharmacy Technician active license (CPhT) in good standing
