Position Summary
This position requires the full understanding and active participation in fulfilling the mission of Saddleback Medical Center. The employee shall support Saddleback Medical Center’s strategic plan and participate in and advocate performance improvement/patient safety activities. The Certified Phlebotomist / Lab Assistant works to collect venous and/or capillary blood from patients in an acute care setting for analysis in the laboratory. This position works to process specimens for the lab in conjunction with other members of the phlebotomy team. In addition to those responsibilities, this role assists Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS), Medical Doctor (MD) or Nurse Practitioner (NP) in performing Clinical Laboratory testing. Maintain working knowledge of departmental Standard Operating procedures as trained. Performs basic preventive maintenance as directed and maintains appropriate levels of regents as required.
Essential Function and Responsibilities of the Job
Performs basic maintenance of instructions designed on checklists, place Quality controls on the instrument run, change or add reagents, discard waste products, place patient specimens on automated analyzers, prepare patient slides and stain the slides as instructed.
Ability to perform phlebotomy and/or capillary puncture as required.
Performs clinical laboratory functions in a prompt and timely manner according to established guidelines, to ensure rapid and accurate treatment of patients.
Follows all steps to insure proper identification of the patient/or secondary specimen container.
Address the age specific needs of all populations served (see Age Specific Checklist).
Ensures that temperatures are read daily from digital thermometers and that preventive maintenance of equipment is performed on a regular basis.
References test reporting and billing to support the Clinical Lab Scientist.

Ability to prioritize and multitask
This job requires working occasional evening mainly night shift. Also, every other weekend. Job requirement: Receiving specimens, Processing samples for send out labs and phlebotomy.
Placement in the pay range is based on multiple factors including, but not limited to, relevant years of experience and qualifications. In addition to base pay, there may be additional compensation available for this role, including but not limited to, shift differentials, extra shift incentives, and bonus opportunities. Minimum Requirements
Qualifications/Work Experience
Three years of experience in acute care laboratory in all departments preferred
Knowledge regarding specimen stability, effects of temperature and hemolysis, and effects of anticoagulants on certain tests
Education/License/Certification
State of California: Certified Phlebotomy Technician I required
Some college science courses preferred
Basic Cardiac Life Support Card required
This job requires working occasional evenings mainly night shift and every other weekend.
