Position Summary

The Child Life Specialist is responsible for assessing and planning therapeutic activity for all pediatric patients at Miller Children's & Women's Hospital Long Beach.  The Child Life Specialist also assists in promoting an optimal learning environment for volunteers, students and other Child Life staff.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities of the Job

  • Provides assessment for patients and families to identify psychosocial and developmental needs and implements child life interventions accordingly.
  • Plans and supervises therapeutic, developmental group and bedside activities to help patients adjust to and cope with hospitalization including support and preparation for medical experiences. Ensures educational and therapeutic goals for patients are met.
  • Acts as a patient and family advocate and contributes to team meetings, patient conferences, Carelines and Partnership Councils.
  • Maintains accurate documentation and approves and co-signs intern chart notes
  • Identifies and provides educational needs for hospital personnel and the community regarding psychosocial and developmental issues.
  • Participates in training and supervising child life students, interns and volunteers.
  • Participates in department Performance Improvement and/or LEAN projects.
  • Coordinates special events and donations accordingly.
  • Maintains ongoing professional development.

*Placement in the pay range is based on multiple factors including, but not limited to, relevant years of experience and qualifications. In addition to base pay, there may be additional compensation available for this role, including but not limited to, shift differentials, extra shift incentives, and bonus opportunities. Minimum Requirements

Qualifications/Work Experience:

  • Completion of an accredited Child Life internship.
  • 1+ year work experience in a Child Life program.

Education/Licensure/Certification:

  • Certified Child Life Specialist.
  • Bachelors Degree in Child Development or related field.
  • Current American Heart Association (AHA) BLS certification.
