Position Summary

The Executive Director, Pharmacy Services is responsible for pharmacy operations, financial, regulatory, clinical, and quality components as well as the overall leadership of acute and non-acute pharmacy services at Long Beach Medical Center (LBM) and Miller Children’s and Women’s Hospital (MCWH). The Executive Director, Pharmacy Services is accountable for pharmacy-related safe medication use; scope of responsibility includes meeting all regulatory requirements, including but not limited to Joint Commission, DEA, CDPH, California Board of Pharmacy, and FDA; and sustains compliance with all applicable policies, procedures, codes, and standards of the organization. The incumbent is responsible for aligning acute and non-acute pharmacy services delivery with system initiatives by executing the strategic direction of pharmacy services in collaboration with enterprise pharmacy strategy to achieve strategic objectives and ensure financial stability and growth, systemwide standardization, and operational efficiency.

This position is also responsible for coordinating the business and financial activities of campus pharmacy services and will collaborate closely with campus and system leadership to continually assess and direct a wide range of issues, including operational, personnel, budgetary, facilities and systems issues, programmatic development, long-range planning and project development.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities of the Job

  • Oversees pharmacy operations across campus acute and non-acute areas.
  • Ensures pharmacy services align with the health system’s strategic initiatives, leveraging pharmacy expertise to improve health outcomes across the continuum of care.
  • Leads the design, operation, and improvement of the organization’s medication management system, ensuring safe, effective, and efficient medication use.
  • Oversees pharmacy financials, including revenue cycle, budgeting, expense/cost control for inpatient and outpatient pharmacy departments; driving execution of clinical contracting initiatives
  • Lead development of a robust clinical pharmacy program and campus pharmacy and therapeutics committee, in alignment with system formulary initiatives.
  • Ensures compliance with all regulations and accreditation standards including, but not limited to California State Board of Pharmacy, DEA, California Department of Health, and Joint Commission.
  • Leads the oversight of pharmacy automation and robotics to enhance pharmacy operations and patient safety in conjunction with system level strategic automation initiatives.
  • Ensure accountability for campus oversight of 340B program in conjunction with system 340B leader(s), lead strategic 340B growth initiatives, and maintain alignment with system 340B program.
  • Oversee the administration, development, and continuous improvement of the pharmacy residency program, ensuring compliance with accreditation standards and fostering a high-quality educational environment for residents.
  • Develops and executes initiatives to mitigate medication-related complications at discharge, improving patient experience and reducing readmission rates.
  • Engages in direct communication with health-system leadership and participates in strategic planning meetings to integrate pharmacy services into broader healthcare initiatives.

*Placement in the pay range is based on multiple factors including, but not limited to, relevant years of experience and qualifications. Minimum Requirements

Qualifications/Work Experience:

  • 5-7 years of progressive pharmacy services leadership experience in a medium to large acute care hospital setting with inpatient and outpatient pharmacy services and 340B program.
  • Expertise in California Pharmacy law, Department of Health Services Title 22, G.M.P., CMS and DEA regulations and JCAHI standards.
  • Expertise in business and use of generally accepted accounting principles.
  • Superior written and verbal communications and interpersonal leadership skills and use of technology. 
  • Hospital or pharmacy management residency, preferred.
  • Active in professional associations and/or community service activities, preferred.
  • Knowledge and understanding of all applicable pharmacy regulated laws and regulations, preferred.
  • Expertise in and/or management of quality and performance improvement initiatives.
  • Superior oral and written communication preferred.
  • Experience or affiliation with a teaching institution preferred.

 Education/Licensure/Certification:

 

  • Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) and licensed Registered Pharmacist in the State of California.
  • Master of Business (MBA) degree,  preferred
  • Completion of a PGY-1 Pharmacy residency program, preferred.
  • Completion of a PGY-2 Health System Pharmacy Administration residency program, preferred.
  • Broad portfolio of experience and/or leadership in ambulatory pharmacy practice areas,
  • 340b Apexus Certified Expert (ACE) certification, preferred.
