Position Summary

This position requires the full understanding and active participation in fulfilling the mission of Orange Coast Medical Center. The employee shall support MemorialCare Medical Centers’ strategic plan and participate in and advocate performance improvement/patient safety activities.

The Infection Control Practitioner (ICP) position is within the Performance Improvement department at Orange Coast Medical Center.The ICP is primarily responsible for the activities aimed at preventing healthcare associated infections (HAIs), ensuring proper Infection Control precautions are in place, and compliance with infection control standards.In collaboration with the Infection Prevention Program Managers, the Infection Control Practitioner is accountable for the development, implementation, management, and operation of the infection prevention programs.The ICP conducts rounds, monitors infection prevention practices, collects data, maintains accurate records of HAIs, submits data internally/externally, and trains staff on infection prevention practices.The ICP ensures that the facility follows all federal and state regulations, CDC guidelines, and quality/safety standards to reduce the risks associated with hospital and community acquired diseases for our patients across the care continuum.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities of the Job

1.Works together with the Infection Prevention Program Managers in the identification of infectious disease processes and surveillance activities.

2.Actively participates in prevention and control of transmission of infectious agents that is in alignment with the Infection Control Plan.

3.Assists Infection Prevention Program Managers with program oversight and ensures compliance with program and medical center policies, protocols, and guidelines.

4.Under the direction of the Infection Prevention Program Managers, uploads and imports accurate data into internal and external databases in a timely manner.

5.Maintains current knowledge of CDC, OSHA, and local/state/federal regulations to ensure compliance with infection control or standard/universal precautions.

6.Tracks and reports hospital-acquired infection rates and creates data reports for dissemination and analysis.

7.Participates in the outbreak investigations and surveillance process.

8.In collaboration with the Infection Prevention Program Managers, assesses the need for, develops, and presents infection prevention education as needed.

9.Participates in Environment of Care and hospital rounds to ensure compliance with hospital infection prevention and control policies, including monitors compliance of personnel with isolation techniques.

10.Notifies the local public health agencies and/or regulatory bodies of reportable diseases in collaboration with the Infection Prevention Program Managers and department leadership.

11.Serves as a member of various hospital and system-wide meetings as an infection prevention representative.

*Placement in the pay range is based on multiple factors including, but not limited to, relevant years of experience and qualifications. Experience

  • Minimum two (2) years’ experience in infectious disease prevention at a healthcare organization, preferred.
  • Microsoft Office products Word, Excel, and PowerPoint knowledge/experience required
  • Working knowledge of and ability to demonstrate a comprehension of medical and nursing education and patient care management, microbiology, pathology, immunology, and medical statistics or biostatistics pre. 
  • Working knowledge of and experience in the practice of epidemiological principles and infectious diseases as related to infection prevention and control preferred
  • Knowledge of and ability to demonstrate a comprehension of medical statistics/biostatistics, data analysis, and reporting of metrics to external agencies. 
  • Knowledge/experience with Microsoft Office products and/or database management
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in science or clinically related field required, masters preferred. Will consider applicant with equivalent knowledge base and/or experience.
  • Post-secondary education in a health-related field including but not limited to medicine, nursing, laboratory technology, public health, or biology, preferred.
  • Certification in Infection Control (CIC) completion, preferred. If completion has not been accomplished upon hire, incumbent will accomplish course completion of specialized study within agreed upon timeframe.
