Position Summary

This position requires the full understanding and active participation in fulfilling the mission of Orange Coast Medical Center. The employee shall support Orange Coast Medical Center’s strategic plan and participate in and advocate performance improvement/patient safety activities.

The Lead, Sterile Processing Technician is responsible for the decontamination, assembly, sterilization, and transportation of surgical and procedural instruments in accordance with industry and regulatory standards and guidelines. In addition, the Lead, Sterile Processing Technician orders and stocks Sterile Processing department supplies from the Materials department. Finally, this position will serve as a point person while on shift to address immediate concerns and troubleshoot problems.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities of the Job

1. Serves as a subject matter expert and go-to person for all activities: prioritizes workload for staff to ensure daily tasks are completed in accordance with patient needs and department policy and procedure.

2. Decontaminates surgical and procedural instruments per manufacturers’ recommendations to ensure the safe utilization of all surgical and procedural instruments.

3. Assembles, inspects, and tests surgical and procedural instruments per department protocol and according to manufacturers’ recommendations to ensure instrument cleanliness and functionality.

4. Operates all equipment appropriately in the Sterile Processing department including, but not limited to, steam sterilizers, H2O2, instrument and cart washers in accordance with the equipment specifications.

5. Uses instrument tracking system in all areas of Sterile Processing department including documentation of tests and sterilizer records for inventory control, regulatory compliance, and continuous data analysis.

6. Examines and maintains integrity of all sterile packages to ensure sterility is maintained for surgical procedures.

7. Prepares operating room case carts according to preference cards on all surgical procedures and prioritizes vendor tray processing.

8. Participates and promotes clear consistent communication through phones, email communications, and interdepartmental communications to enhance and streamline day to day operations within the Sterile Processing department.

9. Precepts and assists new staff with orientation and overall successful integration within the department.

10. Maintains appropriate attire specifically related to sterile surgical environments at all times to ensure the safety and infection control standards are met.

11. Demonstrates ability to integrate knowledge of job responsibilities to complete tasks, resolve problems and achieve goals.

16. Provides support and technical expertise to the SPD department. This includes general oversight for efficient shift workflows, patient safety, and staff productivity. Acts as a resource for staff in all areas of department processes. Leads by example and performs all assignments according to policy and procedure.

17. Prioritizes shift needs during huddles and initiates daily workflow.

18. Assigns staff shift responsibilities and delegates work to meet daily needs.

20. Responsible for thorough and timely communication with OR and other departments to ensure patient needs are met.

21. Maintains cost effective inventories and requests supplies as needed.

22. Follows up with equipment issues and work orders.

23. Ensures all policies, procedures, and department guidelines are being followed.

24. Stays current with education and industry standards to follow best practices.

25. Assists with compiling data and reports. Specifically, collects daily records and verifies data is complete. Ensures audits and checklists are complete. Manages and reports shift IUSS cycles and documents. Identifies trends and gives feedback to management for process improvements.

*Placement in the pay range is based on multiple factors including, but not limited to, relevant years of experience and qualifications. Minimum Requirements

Qualifications/Work Experience:

 

• 1-year Sterile Processing experience or Graduate of a Sterile Processing Technical Training Program required


Education/Licensure/Certification:

 

• Certification by nationally recognized Sterile Processing Board (HSPA-CRCST or CBSPD)

• Advanced certifications preferred (CIS, CER, CHL)

• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification preferred
