Position Summary

This position requires the full understanding and active participation in fulfilling the mission of MemorialCare Saddleback Medical Center. It is expected that the employee demonstrate behavior consistent with our core values: Integrity, Accountability, Best Practices, Compassion, and Synergy. The employee shall support MemorialCare Saddleback Medical Center’s strategic plan and participate in and advocate performance improvement/patient safety activities.

Maintains a working knowledge of laboratory testing and departmental standard operating procedures for specified Laboratory department subsection. This knowledge includes the use of specialized analytical instrumentation, clinical correlation of test results, quality control requirements, and preventative maintenance. Supports the laboratory mission. Participates in the continuous quality improvement process through professional development, continuing education, and quality improvement.

Oversees the Laboratory Quality Improvement program including variance tracking and trending, quality monitoring, and quality presentation preparation.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities of the Job

·Oversees safety, infection control, and OSHA processes.

·Serves as lead trainer and role model for department specific education/training and staff competency in areas of responsibility as needed. Reads and acknowledges email and other correspondence in a timely manner. Oversees MemorialCare Policy Manager (MPM) procedures.

·Oversees unusual occurrence and variance reporting and tracking process. Responsible for ongoing Quality/Safety monitors.

·Oversees the overall functioning of the specialty departments. Regulatory compliance and readiness for CAP and FDA inspections as needed. Documentation is accurate and thorough.

·Oversees patient testing, internal and external quality control (QC) testing, equipment maintenance and supply inventories in assigned Laboratory areas as needed.

·Communicates effectively with managers, staff, and medical director regarding all aspects of the area of specialty. Participates in hospital committees and meetings as needed.

·Uses Performance Improvement/Lean methods, lead area specialty meetings or Lean projects to resolve problems and improve work area.

·Demonstrates ability to work independently. Makes appropriate use of time, and prioritizes effectively. Maintains focus on objectives and goals. Demonstrates proficiency in computer applications needed to gather, analyze, display, and present data.

·Other duties as assigned. 

This position will oversee Microbiology Department. Microbiology experience is a must. Must have Strong leadership skills, flexible and possesses excellent communication skills.Able to cover the bench as needed and demonstrates ability to work independently.Makes appropriate use of time and prioritizes effectively.

*Placement in the pay range is based on multiple factors including, but not limited to, relevant years of experience and qualifications. Minimum Requirements

Qualifications/Work Experience:

A minimum of 3 years of experience as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist in the sections of responsibility

Education/Licensure/Certification:

Current State of California Clinical Laboratory Scientist License is required
