Position Summary

The Palliative Care Chaplain provides spiritual and emotional support to patients, families and staff to assist them in their task of adjusting to spiritual and emotional issues related to illness, lifestyle changes, death and dying in the Spiritual Care department at MemorialCare Long Beach Medical Center/Miller Children's & Women's Hospital Long Beach. These services are accompanied through visitation, a ministry of hospitality, crisis intervention, consultation on ethical issues, and on call coverage as requested.  Integrates theological education and practice in caring for patients, families, and staff of all faiths/cultures in the medical setting.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities of the Job

  1. Participatesindeliveringandarrangingforappropriateandsystematicspiritual/culturalcaretopatients,theirlovedones,andstafftodecreasespiritual distressprecipitatedbyillness,trauma,stress,endoflife,ordeathleadingtoimprovedspiritual/emotionalwell-beingthroughoutthemedicalcenteras assignedbytheDirector.Includingon-callcoverageasneeded.Providescrisisinterventionasnecessary,respondstoCodesasappropriate.
  2. Providesforcultural,religiousandsacramentalneedsofpatients,familiesandstaffthroughcollaborationandreferralstoappropriatefaithcommunitiesand leaders. May include presiding at worship and memorial services for staff andpatients.
  3. Documents a spiritual and emotional assessment and care plan in the electronic medical record.
  4. Collaborates with the interdisciplinary team to enhance the spiritual and cultural components of patient care, and understanding of spiritual distress.
  5. Provides support for staff in relation to the impact of patients suffering and expression of related feelings.
  6. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to communicate effectively in the provision of in-services and education for staff regarding End of Life, AdvanceDirectives,CompassionFatigue,spiritualassessment,careplans,crossculturalbeliefs,andissuesrelatedtospiritualcareinthemedicalsetting.
  7. Supportsaninterdisciplinaryapproachtospiritualcareandculturalsensitivity,participatinginteammeetings,rounds,andcommitteesasappointed. Integrates discipline into decision makingissues.
  8. Attends departmental specific meetings, education/training for regular professional development. Participates in Spiritual Care Department Performance Improvement/Quality Assurance Projects, with approval of Director.
  9. Providesbereavementsupportincludingassistinglovedonestousetheirbeliefsystemincopingwithdeathwhenappropriate,incollaborationwithmulti- disciplinaryteamandDecedentAffairs.Providesfollowupasappropriateforfamiliesandstaff,includingemployeeMemorialServicesasrequested.
  10. Performs other duties as assigned.

*Placement in the pay range is based on multiple factors including, but not limited to, relevant years of experience and qualifications. Minimum Requirements

Qualifications/Work Experience:

  • 1+ years of clinical experience providing spiritual care in a healthcare setting or pastoral care ministry, with experience in Palliative Care preferred. 
  • Evidence of ability to minister in a cross-cultural setting. 

Education/Licensure/Certification:

  • Provide documentation of current ecclesiastical endorsement/good standing by a major religious affiliation for specialized ministry in accordance with his or her faith tradition.
  • Ordained, Licensed, Commissioned or Consecrated Minister (or in process). 
  • A Bachelor's Degree in related field; Masters of Divinity (MDiv) (or equivalency/or in process), or a Master's of Theology Degree (or in process) from accredited theological seminary is preferred. 
  • 1 unit of Clinical Pastoral Education/CPE. 
  • Member in good standing in ACPE, NACC, NAJC, APC or CPSP, Board Certified or in process of being certified, is preferred.
