Position Summary
The Electrocardiogram (EKG) Technician per diem performs all clinical electrocardiograms and related non-invasive cardiac procedures. He/she collaborates with the multidisciplinary healthcare team to schedule an optimal time for EKG testing for the benefit of patient comfort, safety, and privacy. The Electrocardiogram (EKG) Technician per diem is responsible for collecting quality recordings from a variety of patients, as well as reporting any abnormal findings in a timely manner.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities of the Job
- Performs electrocardiograms in both standard and research formats. Able to obtain accurate recordings from a wide variety of patients throughout the hospital. Able to identify and correct for artifacts.
- At all times follows departmental policy to ensure patient safety, comfort, and privacy.
- Reviews patient's medical record independently and instructs patients prior to performing procedures. Is knowledgeable about all aspects of electrocardiogram testing and able to effectively answer all questions from patients and family.
- Correctly identifies abnormal findings and critical findings. Promptly reports them to the patient's nurse according to policy.
- Establishes and maintains complete and accurate reports, logs, charges in accordance with departmental policy. Timely enters charges to ensure financial efficiency.
- Edits EKG reports on the departmental information management system. Able to generate files, film cards, and status reports. Responsible for ensuring delivery or reports to appropriate caregivers, as well as providing a timely response to medical records requests.
- Assists with maintaining equipment and supplies for the department. Stocks supplies and on carts and notifies appropriate personnel when supplies run low.
- Provides coverage for holter monitor hook-ups and disconnects.
- Creates a positive team environment and enhances customer service by supporting a "no gossip" work environment, assuring that complaints are correctly routed to supervisory staff and not shared among coworkers who cannot change the issue. Assures AIDET is used appropriately with patients and families.
- Participates in departmental safety checks and assists with maintenance record keeping as required by departmental policy and statutory regulation.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
*Placement in the pay range is based on multiple factors including, but not limited to, relevant years of experience and qualifications. Minimum Requirements
Qualifications/Work Experience:
- Prior work experience in EKG and non-invasive cardiology is recommended.
- Knowledge of medical terminology is desirable
- Must demonstrate proficiency with EKG equipment and related computer systems.
Education/Licensure/Certification:
- Graduation from an accredited Electrocardiography program is required.
- Departmental training may substitute for educational requirement for exceptional candidates.
- CCI certification (Cardiovascular Credentialing International or NHA, CET certification (National Healthcare Association, Certified EKG Technician) preferred.
- BLS required.
