Position Summary

Under the direction of the Executive Director, Grants, the Grant Writer is responsible for researching, strategizing, and writing grant applications and reports. The Grant Writer will develop a deep understanding of the structure, objectives, programs, and financial needs of the organization, and will work with hospital directors, managers, and their staff to develop compelling grant proposals and accurate narrative and financial reports. The Grant Writer is responsible for cultivating specific funder relationships as assigned by the Executive Director, Grants.

Essential Job Outcomes & Functions                    

  • Research, write, edit, and submit compelling letters of inquiry (LOI) and grant proposals that are responsive to funder requirements and in alignment with hospital strategic and business objectives.
  • Identify potential new funding sources by conducting research on grant funders, including funding interests, grant history, giving potential, and connections to our hospitals and the communities we serve.                    
  • Convene and facilitate meetings with program teams to gather information and develop grant proposals for identified funding needs.                         
  • Ensure program managers/directors have clear understanding of the role and responsibilities of their team in the grants process.               
  • Track compliance with grant agreements and prepare grant reports with clear narrative description of project status and an accurate financial accounting of grant funds.                       
  • Cultivate strong relationships with new and existing funders.                   
  • Document grant cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship activities in Raiser’s Edge NXT database.
  • Edit grant-related documents written by others for completeness, accuracy, persuasiveness, clarity, and alignment with program needs, and responsiveness to guidelines.                  
  • In addition to independent projects, collaborate with Executive Director, Grants on specific projects.
  • Collaborate with Major Gift Officers to share information to support cultivation and solicitation of major gifts. 


  • Knowledge of and experience in grant application process, including research, writing grant proposals, tracking and monitoring grants, and writing grant reports.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to meet deadlines.
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent interpersonal relations and communications skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to work within a diverse team as well as independently.
  • Must have a service mindset and a commitment to continuous learning.
  • Ability to handle all information and data with appropriate confidentiality and security.
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in writing grant proposals, including a minimum of two years in healthcare.
  • Proficiency with Word, Excel, and Outlook. Knowledge of Raiser’s Edge NXT is preferred but not required.


  • Bachelor's Degree required. Professional credentials or advanced degrees are desirable.
