Position Summary
The Perfusionist performs those functions necessary for the support, treatment, measurement and/or supplementation of the cardiopulmonary and/or circulatory system of the patient. The Perfusionist performs advanced technical work in the selection, preparation, operation, and maintenance of the cardiopulmonary bypass and ancillary equipment. The Perfusionist is responsible for the knowledge, operation, and maintenance of a wide variety of technical perfusion equipment utilized in cardiac surgery as well as other circulatory support devices and for close cooperation with the attending physician in extracorporeal perfusion practices. The primary working area is the operating room, however the possibility exists of working in other areas of the Medical Center.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities of the Job
- Provides excellent patient care completing the pre-op patient assessment accurately and formulating a plan-of-care based on the individual patient's condition and co-morbidities (including but not limited to: knowledge of patient's history, pre-op status, labs, cath reports, etc.)
- Understands individual surgeon preferences and adjusts clinical plan accordingly.
- Provides excellent patient care by preparing for cases, selecting necessary supplies for the procedure, and appropriately assembling and preparing all perfusion equipment (including, but not limited to: cardiopulmonary bypass system, cardioplegia delivery system, ultrafiltration, cell savers, etc.)
- Follows accepted standard of care and departmental and hospital Policies and Procedures.
- Provides excellent patient care by demonstrating a working knowledge of cardiopulmonary bypass equipment, anatomy, physiology, physics and the mechanics of cardiopulmonary bypass on a daily basis. Demonstrates understanding and is comfortable using electronic medical records systems and electronic perfusion records.
- Critical situations pertaining to support, treatment, measurement, and/or supplementation of the cardiopulmonary and/or circulatory system of the patient are recognized and reacted to appropriately and communicated to the attending surgeon.
- Appropriate changes are made as needed in therapy when presented with changing conditions, including administration of medication and blood components.Ensures equipment is cleaned, maintained and repaired in compliance with regulatory standards and manufacturer's guidelines.
- Ensures supplies are maintained at required par levels and are ordered and available for procedures.Assumes responsibility for attaining, retaining, and renewing all applicable certifications and continuing education, as required by both statutory regulation and departmental policy.
- Creates a positive team environmentand enhances customer service by supporting a "no gossip" work environment, assuring that complaints are correctly routed to supervisory staff and not shared among coworkers who cannot change the issue.
- Assure AIDET is used appropriately with patients and families.Performs other duties as assigned.

Placement in the pay range is based on multiple factors including, but not limited to, relevant years of experience and qualifications. Minimum Requirements
Qualifications/Work Experience:
- Prior perfusion experience is required. ECMO experience is preferred. A working knowledge of cardioplegia delivery systems, cell saver, IABP, VAD, and ECMO is essential.
Education/Licensure/Certification:
- Bachelor's degree in a related science field.
- Graduate of an accredited training program accredited by the Accreditation Committee for Perfusion Education in cooperation with the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).
- Must be certified as a Certified Clinical Perfusionist (CCP) from the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion. BLS required.
