Position Summary

The Program Manager, Orthopedics & Spine is responsible for the daily oversight and management of all programs under orthopedics and spine. Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to: Data management / analysis of patient outcomes and physician KPIs, development of nursing care protocols / care pathway design and programmatic workflows, patient safety and quality improvement oversight, budget management / expense stewardship, staff and schedule management, resource to physician offices, assist in strategic planning development. Supervises program staff. Problem solving and appropriate escalation of issues is integral to the role. Current programs include joint replacement center, spine center, back/neck pain program, sports medicine program, hip fracture program. Responsible for implementation and oversight of any future programs developed under scope area.

Essential Job Outcomes & Functions

·Development, implementation and maintenance of nursing care protocols / care pathway design and programmatic workflows – Collaboration between different inpatient / outpatient hospital units to develop best practice standard of care nursing protocols for patients in each respective program. Researching best practices and making recommendations and leading efforts to implement in the different units. Assess transitions of care and collaborate with other departments to ensure barriers to patient throughput are removed. Assess referral / administrative workflows to ensure optimal patient experience.

·Patient safety and quality improvement oversight – Ensures nursing patient protocols and physician order sets are being completed. Reviews any escalated patient issues to determine appropriate actions necessary. Provides feedback to the management of various partnering units to ensure performance improvement opportunities are addressed. Ensures nursing education on each unit is completed as appropriate annually. Partners with unit nurse educators to ensure policies / guidelines are continually reviewed with the staff. Leads the quarterly/semi-annual physician quality review meetings, creates the agenda / PowerPoint presentations, and facilitates the meetings.

·Data management / analysis of patient outcomes and physician KPIs – Conducts chart reviews and evaluates department / program performance by continuous review of readmission and complication percentages among other key metrics, and discusses data with program Medical Directors to improve outcomes. Maintains physician productivity dashboards and distributes data monthly. Prepares and analyzes data to visualize any trends for presentation to quarterly/semi-annual physician quality review meetings.

·Staff and schedule management / program staff supervision – Manage and maintain PA and supporting staff schedules. Direct supervision and performance management of program support staff.

·Budget management / expense stewardship – Ensure compliance to the departmental budget. Constantly review expenses and recommend solutions for efficiencies and cost reduction measures.

·Resource to MemorialCare system and physician offices – Point person for LBMC on any system-wide MOSI initiatives, such as CMS patient reported outcomes. Serves as a subject matter expert for work groups / committees that require MOSI involvement. Acts as an operational/programmatic liaison between surgeon office, patients, and hospital staff to address patient and staff concerns and improve quality of care.

·Assist in strategic planning development – Partners with leadership to develop portions of the annual business operating plan. Research best practices and make recommendations for tactics to achieve goals.

·Performs other duties as assigned.

Placement in the pay range is based on multiple factors including, but not limited to, relevant years of experience and qualifications. Minimum Requirements

Qualifications:

·       2 years’ minimum working with orthopedics/spine.

·       2 years’ minimum experience in program coordination.

Education/Licensure/Certification:

·       Bachelor of Science Nursing (BSN) required.

·       Current Registered Nurse (RN) in the state of California required.

·       MSN, MBA, MHA, or MPH preferred. Related certification preferred.
