Position Summary

This position requires the full understanding and active participation in fulfilling the mission of Saddleback Medical Center. The employee shall support Saddleback Medical Center’s strategic plan and participate in and advocate performance improvement/patient safety activities.

The Chaplain provides spiritual and emotional support to patients, families, and staff to assist them in their task of adjusting to spiritual and emotional issues related to illness, lifestyle changes, death, and dying.These services are accomplished through systematic visitation, a ministry of hospitality, crisis intervention, consultation on ethical issues, and on call coverage as requested. Integrates theological education and practice in caring for patients, families and staff of all faiths/cultures in the medical setting.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities of the Job

1.Participates in delivering and arranging for appropriate and systematic spiritual/cultural care to patients, their loved ones, and staff to decrease spiritual distress precipitated by illness, trauma, stress, end of life, or death leading to improved spiritual/emotional well-being throughout the medical center as assigned by the Director. Including on-call coverage as needed.

2.Provides crisis intervention as necessary, responds to Codes as appropriate.

3.Provides for cultural, religious and sacramental needs of patients, families and staff through collaboration and referrals to appropriate faith communities and leaders. May include presiding at worship and memorial services for staff and patients.

4.Documents a spiritual and emotional assessment and care plan in the electronic medical record.

5.Collaborates with the interdisciplinary team to enhance the spiritual and cultural components of patient care and understanding of spiritual distress.

6.Provides support for staff in relation to the impact of patients suffering and expression of related feelings.

7.Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to communicate effectively in the provision of in-services and education for staff regarding End of Life, Advance Directives, Compassion Fatigue, spiritual assessment, care plans, cross cultural beliefs, and issues related to spiritual care in the medical setting.

8.Supports an interdisciplinary approach to spiritual care and cultural sensitivity, participating in team meetings, rounds, and committees as appointed.Integrates discipline into decision making issues.

9.Attends departmental specific meetings, education/training for regular professional development.Participates in Spiritual Care Department Performance Improvement/Quality Assurance Projects, with approval of Director.

10.Provides bereavement support including assisting loved ones to use their belief system in coping with death when appropriate, in collaboration with multi-disciplinary team and Decedent Affairs.Provides follow up as appropriate for families and staff, including employee Memorial Services as requested.

11.Ability to be at work and be on time.

12.Ability to follow company policies, procedures and directives.

13.Ability to interact in a positive and constructive manner.

14.Ability to prioritize and multitask.

*Placement in the pay range is based on multiple factors including, but not limited to, relevant years of experience and qualifications. In addition to base pay, there may be additional compensation available for this role, including but not limited to, shift differentials, extra shift incentives, and bonus opportunities. Minimum Requirements

Qualifications/Work Experience:

  • 1+ year of inpatient clinical experience providing spiritual care in a healthcare setting.  Evidence of ability to minister in a cross-cultural setting.

Education/Licensure/Certification:

  • Documentation of current ecclesiastical endorsement/good standing by a major religious affiliation for specialized ministry in accordance with his or her faith tradition

  • Ordained, Licensed, Commissioned or Consecrated Minister (or in process)

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field required. Master of Divinity or Master of Theology Degree preferred from accredited theological seminary

  • 3 +units of Clinical Pastoral Education/CPE or its equivalency

  • Memmber in good standing of ACPE, NACC, APC or CPSP required
