Position Summary
Reporting to the Vice President, Clinical Operations with a matrixed reporting structure to the health system Executive Director, Clinical Institutes, this position directs, controls and is accountable for the MemorialCare Orthopedic & Spine Institute (MOSI) and MemorialCare Neurosciences Institute (MNI) at Long Beach Medical Center in collaboration with their physician and nursing triad partners across the integrated and matrixed service line model. Programmatic oversight includes the Joint Replacement Center, Spine Center, Back and Neck Health Center, sports medicine program, TJC Comprehensive Stroke Center, epilepsy program, Neurodiagnostic Laboratory and Sleep Disorders Center, and any other new programs that are developed under these two institutes. Ensures sound interdisciplinary partnership over program patients across the organization: ED, perioperative, ICU, nursing floor, IRF/ARU, etc. Develops long and short-term business strategies, operational plans and oversees implementation. Manages the design, structure, development, and planning issues within scope of direction. Responsible for quality, service, and regulatory compliance for areas of responsibility. Partners with pediatric counterparts at MCWH to ensure any cross coverage of services or transitions of care are seamless.
Responsible for: providing business integration; operational leadership; planning, developing, and directing patient care programs; development and management of related budgets / capital projects for assigned areas. Oversight of data collection and analytics to help drive patient quality/safety and business decisions. Duties also include execution on performance metrics (including but not limited to: CMS Star Ratings, Joint Commission Accreditations, Leapfrog, US News and World Report, etc) and addressing identified gaps. Ensures adherence to accreditation / certification standards and clinical regulations, uses data analysis and performance metrics to guide quality improvement efforts.
Responsible for physician alignment including physician alignment models and adoption as applicable to MOSI, MNI, and academic affiliation(s). Also responsible for special projects as assigned.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities of the Job
- Provides leadership in collaboration with Executive leadership team and physician dyad partner to plan, develop, implement and evaluate patient care programs, services and practice models including identification of business objectives, capital and other resource needs, expected operating revenues and expenses, allocation of space and organization of program personnel and other operation components.
- Provides fiscal and business planning that promotes revenue enhancements and cost efficiency. Develops, implements and monitors proforma models, operating and capital budgets, and service line profitability.
- Provides leadership in collaboration with physician dyad partner for program development initiatives. Assists in the development of plans, and responsible for successful implementation. Also with physician dyad partner,support continuous improvement efforts that promote clinical excellence, revenue enhancement and cost efficiency. Establishes and maintains collaborative relationships.
- Partners with other departmental leaders to plan, develop, implement and evaluate new patient care programs and practice models including identification of clinical objectives, capital and other resource requirements, expected operating revenues and expenses, allocation of space and organization of program personnel and other operation components. This includes transitions of care from pediatric campus to adult campus, and assisting pediatric campus as needed.
- Proactively evaluates, recommends and secures technologies, in partnership with other departments (ie. Periop and imaging) that advance Institutes and patient care outcomes, efficiency and consumer centricity.
- Creates and monitors infrastructure, systems, processes, and standards to achieve desired outcomes in collaboration with medical directors, leadership, department chairs and medical staff. Ownership of policies & procedures as it relates to care pathways and ancillary areas under scope.
- Oversees data collection and analytics of all program patients to ensure quality, patient throughput, productivity, and regulatory measures are tracked. Recommends and leads performance improvement initiatives to address any gaps. Partners with quality department to manage any accreditations related to ortho and neuro offerings.
- Assists in the development of strategic and long-range plans, within the context and framework of the overarching MHS / LBMC / MCWH strategic plan, for the effective implementation and operation of specific patient care programs and associated activities in collaboration with nursing unit leadership, other departments, and pediatric partners.
- Oversees and manages programmatic staff, ensuring proper recruitment, training, and evaluation of personnel. In collaboration with staff supervisors, ensure all MOSI & MNI programmatic services are appropriately staffed and aligned with hospital goals.
- In alignment with established strategic initiatives, creates effective outreach programs partnering with marketing and business development teams to meet the needs of patients in secondary and tertiary market areas and partners with business development to implement plans. Establishes new relationships in the community and cultivates existing relationships to ensure community needs are met and new referral streams are managed.
- Implements physician alignment strategies including evaluation and adoption of new alignment models. Participates and collaborates with physician recruitment initiatives.
- Facilitates the efforts towards achieving payer / employer / industry designations and initiatives (such as but not limited to centers of excellence, centers of distinction, bundled payment models, etc.)
- Participates in any organization or system-wide committees / meetings to ensure proper alignment to organization or system goals.
- Responsible for special projects as assigned and performs other duties as assigned.
*Placement in the pay range is based on multiple factors including, but not limited to, relevant years of experience and qualifications. Minimum Requirements
Qualifications/Work Experience:
- Minimum of 8 years of relevant progressive management experience required.
- Demonstrated experience in developing successful working relationships at all levels of the organization.
Education/Licensure/Certification:
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field required.
- Master’s degree required or a combination of education and professional experience that provides the incumbent with the requisite knowledge, skills and ability to successfully perform the job.
