Position Summary:
The Sterile Processing Department (SPD) Manager is responsible for the overall leadership, planning, and daily operations of the Sterile Processing Department at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center. This role ensures that all surgical instruments and medical equipment are properly decontaminated, assembled, sterilized, and distributed in compliance with hospital policies, regulatory standards, and infection prevention guidelines.
Directly accountable for ensuring that decontamination, preparation, sterilization, storage and distribution are completed and accurately documented as outlined by regulatory agencies for reusable supplies, instruments, procedure trays and sterile linen.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
Responsible for ensuring correct procedures are followed throughout the Medical Center pertaining to decontamination and sterilization which is reported to the Infection Control Committee. This position is also responsible for acquisition, storage, distribution, tracking and revenue recovery of all patient durable medical equipment, including equipment rented from outside vendors. This position is responsible for effective and efficient use of resources to ensure the assets of the Medical Center are properly documented, maintained and accounted for which result in the lowest total delivered cost. This position is the designated representative to oversee Sterile Processing and Linen services for Miller Children’s Hospital.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities of the Job:
Leadership & Oversight
·Direct and manages SPD staff, including hiring, training, scheduling, and performance evaluations.
·Establishes departmental goals, policies, and procedures aligned with hospital standards.
Operations Management
·Oversee all aspects of decontamination, assembly, sterilization, and distribution of surgical instruments and supplies.
·Ensures compliance with AAMI, AORN, Joint Commission, and CMS standards.
·Maintains accurate inventory of instruments, equipment, and supplies.
Quality & Compliance
·Implements quality assurance programs to monitor sterilization effectiveness and adherence to infection control practices.
·Collaborates with Operating Room leadership, Nursing, and other clinical departments to ensure timely availability of sterile instruments.
·Prepares for and participates in regulatory inspections and audits
·Financial & Strategic Management Develops and manages departmental budget, including labor, equipment, and supply costs.
·Identifies opportunities for process improvement and cost savings.
·Leads initiatives to adopt new sterilization technologies and best practices.
Placement in the pay range is based on multiple factors including, but not limited to, relevant years of experience and qualifications. In addition to base pay, there may be additional compensation available for this role, including but not limited to, shift differentials, extra shift incentives, and bonus opportunities. Education
• Required: Associate degree in healthcare, business, or related field.
• Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in healthcare administration, nursing, or related discipline.
Certification
• Required: Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) or Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (CSPDT).
• Preferred: Certified Healthcare Leader (CHL) or Certified Instrument Specialist (CIS).
Experience
• Minimum 5 years of sterile processing experience, with at least 2–3 years in a supervisory or management role.
• Demonstrated knowledge of sterilization techniques, infection prevention, and regulatory compliance.
• Experience in a large acute-care hospital or academic medical center preferred.
Skills
• Strong leadership and team-building skills.
• Excellent communication and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams.
• Proficiency in SPD tracking systems (e.g., Centric, SPM, or equivalent).
• Ability to manage budgets, staffing, and departmental performance metrics.
