Position Summary
The Quality Improvement Coordinator plays a key role in advancing the organization’s Quality, Patient Safety, and Performance Improvement initiatives in alignment with strategic goals. Leads and facilitates efforts to enhance clinical outcomes, strengthens patient safety practices, and ensures regulatory compliance. Monitors and evaluates clinical and operational processes, supports physician peer review activities, and provides expert consultation on performance improvement methodologies. Acting as a resource and facilitator, collaborates with physicians, clinical teams, and departmental leaders to promote effective quality initiatives and drive continuous improvement across the Medical Center.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities of the Job
Clinical Quality and Performance Improvement (PI):
Leads and facilitates clinical performance improvement teams/taskforces as indicated
Demonstrates a working knowledge and competency in applying PI frameworks and tools such as rapid cycle improvement, Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA), Root Cause Analysis (RCA), and LEAN methodologies
Utilizes performance improvement tools to identify, facilitate, and implement improvements within the medical center
Provides consultation on process improvement methods and data analysis to staff responsible for quality activities
Partners with medical staff and clinical leaders to identify best practices and recommend process enhancements to reduce risk and improve quality
Collaborates with departmental and physician leadership to implement and monitor quality improvement initiatives
Conduct clinical case reviews and identify system issues or cases meeting criteria for physician peer review
Participates in the review of medical staff performance metrics, including mortality and patient safety indicators
Data Management, Analytics, & Reporting
- Analyzes internal and external data to identify opportunities for improvement
- Designs study plans and develops data collection methods, report formats, and action plans
- Creates clear and accurate data displays and graphics for presentations and reports
- Develops and implements data collection processes, including identifying required data elements and performing data abstraction per specifications
- Validates quality data prior to internal or external distribution (e.g. regulatory reporting, safety collaboratives)
- Prepares reports for performance improvement and medical staff committees
Regulatory Readiness and Accreditation
- Maintains knowledge of evidence-based practice, CMS and Joint Commission requirements, medical staff peer review standards, and clinical metric specifications (e.g., eCQMs, AHRQ PSIs, HACs) and serves as a resource to staff
- Supports reporting requirements for CMS HIQRP/HOQRP, TJC, and other regulatory bodies
Participates in regulatory survey readiness and provides support for regulatory activities
Leadership Skills
- Facilitates meetings, presents data and reports, identifies key findings and assists with action plans and implementation.
- Serves as the Medical Center’s subject matter expert in performance improvement methodologies and data analysis, providing expert consultation and guidance to clinical and operational leaders
- Supports the Medical Center’s strategic plan of becoming a high reliability organization
- Performs other duties as assigned
*Placement in the pay range is based on multiple factors including, but not limited to, relevant years of experience and qualifications. Minimum Requirements
Qualifications/Work Experience:
Minimum 2 years’ clinical experience in related healthcare field preferred.
Experience in quality, patient safety, performance improvement and The Joint Commission regulatory standards preferred.
Proficient in computer skills including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, etc.,), RL Datix, Vizient, and Electronic Medical Record such as EPIC preferred.
Data management proficiency and graphical display skills preferred.
Education/Licensure/Certification:
- Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in state of California required.
- Bachelor’s degree in nursing or higher preferred.
- Current certification/licensure of advanced, specialized study (such as CPHQ, HACP, etc.) preferred.
