Position Summary
This position requires the full understanding and active participation in fulfilling the mission of Saddleback Medical Center. Maternity Doula II is an unlicensed caregiver who works under the direction of the Registered Nurse (RN) to provide continuous emotional, physical, and informational support to laboring patients and their families throughout labor, delivery, and the immediate postpartum period. This role enhances the birthing experience by offering culturally sensitive care, patient advocacy, and comfort measures within the Labor, Delivery, Recovery, and Postpartum (LDRP) units.
In addition, to primary responsibilities for this role is integral to unit operations by providing emergency management, admission support, and care coordination at the LDRP Operations Station/Desk when not actively supporting patients. The position oversees emergency patient admissions; coordinates care during high-acuity events and serves as the central communication point to ensure rapid response and seamless teamwork during critical incidents. It also supports patient registration and procedural scheduling for OB services, facilitates patient flow, and performs traditional Patient Care Assistant clinical tasks, including assisting with activities of daily living, obtaining vital signs, and other direct patient care under RN supervision. This dual-capacity role requires strong critical thinking, prioritization, and collaboration skills to maintain patient safety and optimize unit efficiency.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities of the Job
1.Provides continuous labor support by offering emotional reassurance, physical comfort measures (such as mobility assistance, positioning, breathing techniques, and massage), and informational guidance to the birthing person and their support system, ensuring culturally sensitive care and patient advocacy to enhance the birthing experience.
2.Advocates for the birthing person expressed preferences and birth preferences in collaboration with the nursing and medical team, without interfering in medical decisions or clinical care.
3.Assists with basic patient care tasks, including ADLs, vital signs, hygiene, repositioning, ambulation, breastfeeding support, and equipment setup, all under RN supervision.
4.Coordinates care teams during emergency incidents by ensuring all required critical care teams are promptly notified and arrive at the appropriate location. Serves as the central communication station/desk to facilitate rapid response, manage admissions, and maintain smooth teamwork during high-acuity events.
5.Includes responsibilities for patient registration, scheduling, and maintaining efficient patient flow, along with accurate documentation and communication including accurate non-clinical observations and support activities in the patient’s electronic medical record.
6.Manage patient flow during admissions, transfers, and discharges while supporting registration, scheduling, accurate documentation, in the electronic medical record to ensure smooth unit operations and excellent patient experience.
7.Emphasizes adherence to hospital policies, cultural competence, ongoing education, and fostering a collaborative, positive team environment.
8.Communicates clearly, promptly, and effectively with the registered nurse and other healthcare providers regarding patient needs or changes in behavior or emotional status.
9.Ability to be at work and be on time.

*Placement in the pay range is based on multiple factors including, but not limited to, relevant years of experience and qualifications. Minimum Requirements
Qualifications/Work Experience:
· One year of experience providing doula services or equivalent labor support is preferred.
· One year of experience as a Patient Care Assistant in an acute care setting.
· Basic computer skills.
· Proficient in verbal and written English.
Education/Licensure/Certification:
· Current American Heart Association Basic Cardiac Life Support Card required
