Position Summary
The Radiation Physicist / Safety Officer reports directly to the Director of Imaging Services to assist the Physicians in matters pertaining to the physical aspects of the use of radiation sources in the treatment of cancer patients. This position is also responsible for directing, controlling and coordinating the radiation safety program to promote the proper and safe use of radioactive materials and equipment.
This position requires the full understanding and active participation in fulfilling the mission of Saddleback Medical Center. Essential Functions and Responsibilities of the Job
- Works directly with Radiology Therapeutic department staff to ensure safe operations and quality of systems used for imaging and the treatment of patients.
- Create and implement procedures which allow for the best patient treatment and outcomes utilizing radiation while maintaining the appropriate safety of patients and staff members.
- Collaborates with other disciplines to ensure radiotherapy equipment and computer technology are working correctly to enhance the implementation of procedures
- Consults with Physicians to provide advice as to the best use of medical radiation for treatment and protection.
- Preforms accurate measurements and calibration checks with machine x-ray beam to ensure quality assurance and compliance with the American Academy of Pain Medicine (AAPM), American Society for Therapeutic Radiologists (ASTR), Title 17, and Joint Commission for Accreditation of Hospitals.
- Review patient dosimetry and evaluate treatment setups and charge for accuracy to maintain a high level of quality assurance.
- Follow rules and regulations of the Radiation Safety Program in order to comply with the requirements of the California Radiation Control Regulations. Title 17, and the Medical Center’s license for radioactive material.
- Collaborates with Physicians and Technologists for optimal treatment plan and setup to obtain professional consensus to ensure best practice and positive patient outcomes.
- Preforms and documents quality assurance principles and procedures for all treatment areas.
- Administers treatment planning for radio surgery and high activity remote after loader areas.
- Collaborates with the billing office to ensure timely and accurate billing of all procedures.
- Provides oversight for the endocurietherapy and hyperthermia procedures to comply with the department protocol.
- Provides education and training of hospital personnel, radiation oncology residents, radiation therapists and students to maintain high level of professionalism and safety.

*Placement in the pay range is based on multiple factors including, but not limited to, relevant years of experience and qualifications. Minimum Requirements
Qualifications/Work Experience:
- 4 years clinical experience in Radiation Physics and Radiation Safety preferred
Education/Licensure/Certification:
- Master’s degree in Radiology Physics required
- Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support Card (BLS) required
- Current American Board of Radiology Therapeutic Medical Physics certification preferred
