Position Summary

MemorialCare Medical Group is seeking a BC/BE Pediatric Endocrinologist to provide high-quality, family-centered care in a community-based pediatric specialty practice. This position is based at the Cherese Mari Laulhere Children’s Village at Miller Children’s & Women’s Hospital Long Beach, located on the campus of MemorialCare Long Beach Medical Center.

The Pediatric Endocrinologist provides comprehensive specialty medical care to pediatric patients with endocrine and metabolic disorders in both ambulatory and inpatient settings. The role includes evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing management of conditions within the scope of pediatric endocrinology, consistent with MemorialCare Medical Group clinical standards, policies, and applicable regulations.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

Clinical Care

  • Evaluate, diagnose, and manage pediatric patients with endocrine and metabolic conditions including diabetes mellitus, thyroid disease, growth and pubertal disorders, adrenal and pituitary diseases, disorders of sexual development, and calcium/bone metabolism disorders.

  • Provide outpatient ambulatory care including initial consultations, longitudinal management, follow-up visits, and care coordination. 

  • Provide inpatient consultation services for hospitalized pediatric patients and participate in the assigned call schedule. 

  • Develop and implement individualized treatment plans in accordance with current standards of pediatric endocrine care. 

  • Order, interpret, and act upon laboratory, imaging, and diagnostic studies relevant to pediatric endocrinology. 

  • Prescribe medications, therapies, and medical devices (e.g., insulin pumps, continuous glucose monitoring) as clinically indicated. 

  • Document encounters accurately and timely in the electronic health record (EHR) in accordance with policy and regulatory requirements.

Collaboration and Care Coordination

  • Collaborate with neonatologists, pediatric intensivists, pediatric emergency medicine physicians, and other other physician colleagues, nurses, diabetes educators, dietitians, social workers, and other allied health professionals to ensure coordinated, family-centered care.

  • Participate in interdisciplinary case discussions, clinical pathways, and care planning as appropriate.

  • Communicate effectively with patients, families, and caregivers regarding diagnoses, treatment plans, and disease management.

Quality, Compliance, and Professional Practice

  • Adhere to MemorialCare Medical Group policies, clinical protocols, and quality standards.

  • Comply with federal, state, and local regulations, including documentation, privacy, coding, and billing requirements.

  • Participate in quality improvement, patient safety, and performance improvement initiatives as assigned.

  • Maintain current knowledge of developments in pediatric endocrinology and engage in continuing medical education (CME).

  • Participate in medical staff meetings, committees, and other administrative duties as required.

Teaching and Program Support (as applicable)

  • Participate in teaching and mentoring of medical students, residents, or fellows, if applicable.

  • Support development of pediatric endocrine programs, pathways, and clinical initiatives.

Qualifications

Required

  • MD or DO from an accredited medical school.

  • Completion of an accredited Pediatric Residency Program.

  • Completion of an accredited Pediatric Endocrinology Fellowship Program.

  • Board Certification/Board Eligibility in Pediatric Endocrinology by the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP).

  • Active, unrestricted California medical license (or eligibility to obtain prior to start).

  • Current DEA registration.

  • Eligibility for and maintenance of hospital medical staff privileges at MemorialCare-affiliated facilities.

Preferred

  • Clinical experience in both inpatient and outpatient pediatric endocrinology settings.

  • Experience with diabetes technologies, including insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitoring (CGM).

  • Experience in multidisciplinary pediatric care and population health initiatives.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Comprehensive knowledge of pediatric endocrine diseases and standards of care.

  • Ability to provide age-appropriate, family-centered care.

  • Strong clinical judgment and diagnostic decision-making skills.

  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary healthcare team.

  • Proficiency with EHR systems and clinical documentation.

  • Commitment to professionalism, ethical practice, and continuous improvement.

Work Environment

Work is performed in clinical settings including outpatient clinics and hospital inpatient units. May involve exposure to communicable diseases, bodily fluids, chemicals, and other hazards typical of a healthcare environment. Requires adherence to infection prevention and safety protocols.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods within clinical and hospital environments.

  • Ability to perform physical examinations and clinical procedures typical of pediatric endocrine practice.

  • Visual, auditory, and motor skills sufficient to provide safe and effective patient care.

  • Ability to work extended hours, evenings, weekends, and call shifts as necessary.

  • May include travel to outpatient specialty clinics such as Torrance and Fountain Valley.

Schedule and Call

This position includes scheduled ambulatory clinic sessions and inpatient consultation coverage. Participation in the division call schedule is required; specific rotation and frequency are determined by departmental needs.

Supervisory Responsibility

May provide clinical direction to residents, students, nursing staff, diabetic educators, and allied health staff as applicable. May serve as a supervising physician for the Group’s Advanced Health Practitioner(s) in Pediatric Endocrinology, as applicable.
